Biker Memorial Patches

Biker memorial patches are used by bikers to serve as remembrance for club members or friends that have died. It is a custom followed by many biker clubs.

How the Patches are Laid Out

There are no specific rules on how these patches are laid out. Most biker patches are placed in the back. For the memorial types there is no ruling. It is a matter of personal preference.

Some bikers like to place the patch at the lower part of the vest. This way they can add new patches when necessary. Another option is to distribute the patches all around the vest. You can also place them on the shoulders and arms, or at the front.

Designs

They are as varied as any other biker patch type. Some have a rectangular border. The words “in memory of…” are written over a background picture. Others use a plain color instead of a background picture.

Some patches are shaped like crosses with the name of the deceased biker written on. The name may also be superimposed on eagles, wings, skulls and other designs.

How to Make a Custom Patch

Draw a sketch on tracing paper. Place the image embroidery program in your computer. Make any modifications required. Save the design and put the design in the sewing machine.

The machine should sew the patch on its own. Repeat the process for the other patches you want to make. Now you can start sewing this patch.

How to Sew the Patch

Before you start sewing your biker memorial patches, choose the needle and thread. Polyester jackets can use ordinary thread. For leather jackets, 100% nylon or polyester is recommended. Pick a color that complements the patch. Heavy needles are needed for sewing on leather jackets.

Step 1

Place the patch in the desired location (remember, it can be anywhere). Make sure it is the right one because it will be hard to remove. Thread the needle and secure a knot at the end.

Put the needle below the patch. Pull it out of the patch and jacket. Move the needle 1/8 of an inch. Bring out the needle out again.

Step 2

Keep repeating the process until it is all around the patch.

Step 3

Fasten it to the end. Pull the thread out of the patch through your jacket when you make it back to the first stitch. Anchor the final stitch on the start and end.

Step 4

Repeat the steps above for any other patches you want to add.

Tips

If you are joining a bike club, ask where these patches should be placed. As stated, they can be put anywhere, but your club may have their own rules. They may also have their own patches. Inquire first before you order or make any of your own.

Although there are many types of motorcycle clubs, the biker memorial patch is something they all share in common. The designs and layouts may differ, but the meaning is the same: to keep the memory of a fallen friend alive.
